Diese etwa 10-14 cm langen Tiere haben die instinktive Eigenart, abgestorbene Hautschuppen von den Füßen zu knabbern, was zu einer deutlichen Verbesserung der Hautqualität führen kann. Das warme Wasser sorgt für eine erste Vorbehandlung, indem die Haut aufgeweicht wird. Danach kommen die Fische zum Einsatz. Da sie keine Zähne besitzen und die Haut mit Hilfe der starken Saugkraft ('Saugbarben') ihres Maules entfernen, verursacht dieser Vorgang keinerlei Schmerzen. Der Kunde spürt ein leichtes Kribbeln oder Kitzeln. Nach der Behandlung ist die Haut sehr viel weicher, das Hautbild hat sich verbessert.
